BrainMatters FALL/WINTER 2018 19 FIND MISSING SENIORS FASTER It's commonly cited that three out of five people with dementia will wander from home. For families and caregivers, the disappearance of a loved one with dementia can be devastating. Motivated by his own experience and those of other families he knows, caregiver Ron Beleno teamed up with occupational therapy professor Dr. Lili Liu to create Community ASAP — an alert system that allows first responders to trigger notifications to community volunteers when an older adult goes missing in their neighbourhood. Local volunteers will receive an immediate alert through email or app notification with a description of the senior so the missing individual can be found faster. CABHI's role: Supported by CABHI funding, the Community ASAP team is testing and validating their unique early-stage innovation across Canada with groups of volunteers, caregivers and police. They'll be using the feedback from participants in these trials to refine the system. CABHI will also help shape the project's business model. MOTIVATIONAL EXERCISE How can seniors maintain enjoyable physical activity as they age? Motiview is an innovative technology that encourages exercise in older adults and those living with dementia. It works by positioning users on a stationary exercise bicycle in front of a screen that simulates views of actual rides from around the world. An older adult can take a virtual bicycle trip through familiar surroundings and memories, increasing physical activity and cognitive training. CABHI's role: CABHI matched Motiview with three well-known trial sites in Canada (one of them being Baycrest), helping this Norwegian technology make its North American debut. The scientific evidence and user validation gained from this multisite trial will be used to accelerate the product to market. CABHI also provides financial support, commercialization expertise and access to its network of seniors' care connections. To make a donation to support CABHI's innovative and vital work, email the Baycrest Foundation at donations@baycrest.org or call 416-785-2875. commercialization expertise and access to its network of
