32 ROTMAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE Connecting the culture of research with the culture of care IMPROVING CARE FOR OLDER ADULTS AND PATIENTS WITH DEMENTIA To reach a point where we can start effectively preventing, detecting, and treating dementia, various types of research needs to come together: from basic science that uncovers mysteries of the human brain, to clinical studies that improve care at the bedside, to innovative technological tools that will transform the aging experience. The Ben & Hilda Katz Inter- Professional Research Program in Geriatric and Dementia Care, led by RRI Senior Scientist, Dr. Nicole Anderson, will unite Baycrest's scientists, clinicians, and front-line staff to engage in applied research that will help increase the culture of research and innovation across the entire Baycrest campus to: 1) address the unique clinical care challenges of frail older adults, particularly those with dementia; 2) develop and disseminate best care practices to increase capacity to care for complex cases across the spectrum of healthcare services; 3) create and evaluate new inter- professional programs to maintain brain health and wellness among older adults. From lab to life ACCESS TO GROUNDBREAKING INTERVENTIONS AND TREATMENTS After decades of studying the brain, promising prevention and treatment options are finally emerging. While most prevention approaches have been tested only in relatively small groups, and most dementia treatments have only shown benefits in mice, some of these approaches could show benefits for larger groups of patients. The launch of our new Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), directed by Dr. Howard Chertkow, will enable RRI scientists and others across Baycrest to bring ideas from the lab into life. The CTU will be the coordinating hub for groundbreaking pharmacological and non-pharmacological clinical trials across the Baycrest campus, in collaboration with researchers across Canada and worldwide. Baycrest has long set the stage to move forward the latest dementia research, care, and innovative solutions, as the home to long-term care, a retirement home, a hospital, a world-renowned research centre, and an innovation accelerator. By building upon existing clinical trials at Baycrest, such as those currently underway as part of the CCNA, and leveraging our unique service model, the CTU will centralize and sustain the necessary infrastructure and staff resources to offer clients and community members the latest treatments to help every older adult enjoy a life of purpose, inspiration, and fulfilment.
