24 ROTMAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation The Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation (CABHI), powered by Baycrest, is a solution accelerator for the aging and brain health sector, providing funding and support to innovators for the development, testing, and dissemination of new ideas and technologies that address unmet needs in brain health and seniors' care. RRI scientists play a critical role in CABHI's success. Established in 2015, CABHI is the result of the largest investment in brain health and aging in Canadian history, and is a unique collaboration of healthcare, science, industry, not-for-profit, and government partners. CABHI aims to help improve quality of life for the world's aging population by allowing older adults to age safely in the setting of their choice, while maintaining their cognitive, emotional, and physical well-being. APPLYING ACADEMIC RIGOUR TO THE LATEST INNOVATIONS IN SENIORS' CARE Rigorous testing and validation play a key role in offering the best solutions that will help people live long, live well, and live more fully. Through the Baycrest Health Innovation Platform (BHIP), CABHI provides a model for other organizations to seamlessly adopt a multi-disciplinary approach among scientific experts, point-of-care staff, and industry leaders, as well as embrace a culture of innovation across the organization. As one part of BHIP, scientists employ their knowledge and research expertise to critically evaluate the evidence behind new solutions and provide mentorship to healthcare staff and companies interested in pursuing and testing original ideas. This in-depth analysis and support helps ensure that consumers will have access to the most effective products and solutions to improve aging and brain health. Phase I of the BHIP model is currently being implemented at Baycrest with the assistance of seven RRI scientists representing CABHI as the inaugural Scientific Officers, as well as invaluable contributions to validation testing by KL-CARE staff. RRI scientists are involved in the development and testing of numerous CABHI innovations, providing a bridge between foundational and translational research. From detecting and preventing falls, to predicting and delaying dementia, RRI researchers are supporting CABHI innovators in Canada and around the world. Visit CABHI online to learn more here.
