10 ROTMAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE
INVESTMENTS IN OUR
STATE-OF-THE-ART EQUIPMENT
The RRI received a boost in brain
research infrastructure thanks
to a $4.5 million investment
from the Canada Foundation
for Innovation and the Ontario
Research Fund.
With this funding, the
RRI is upgrading its
magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI), eyetracking,
electroencephalography
(EEG), and brain stimulation
equipment (transcranial
magnetic stimulation, known
as TMS); and purchasing a new
magnetoencephalography (MEG)
machine. Baycrest is one of the
few institutions in the world with
all of these types of research
equipment in a single building,
providing our scientists and
trainees with unrivaled tools to
study human brain structure
and function. This state-of-the-
art infrastructure enables our
researchers to capture detailed
brain measurements to better
understand its processing,
track eye movements to delve
into memory and perception,
and explore how neurological
disorders disrupt brain
communication.
Insights from these studies are
important for the development of
personalized memory and brain
health treatments that account
for each individual's distinct
profile, such as their mental,
physical, and social health.
Technology and big data
are front and centre in
Baycrest's aging and
brain health research.
As a one-stop-shop
for neuroimaging, this
equipment helps RRI
researchers discover
ways to transform
care for older adults
and pursue unique
approaches to protect
brain health during aging
and prevent dementia.
