COLLABORATIONS CURIOUS AND CONNECTED: SHARING EXPERTISE Dr. William E. Reichman, president and CEO of Baycrest, is co-chair of the federal government's Ministerial Advisory Board on Dementia, which advises Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor on matters related to the health of persons living with dementia. The board represents people living with dementia, caregivers, researchers, advocacy groups and healthcare professionals. " The increasing prevalence of dementia is one of the greatest public health challenges of our time. This advisory board presents an opportunity to integrate the shared perspectives of all stakeholders impacted by dementia, and to build on the innovation assets we have across the country. Together, we must ensure that key supports will be in place to address the needs of the aging population. " -William E. Reichman, MD Baycrest's new Chair in Cognitive Neurology and Innovation is Dr. Howard Chertkow, who has relocated from Montreal to Toronto. Dr. Chertkow is Scientific Director of the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA), which links 400 leading dementia researchers across Canada who are aiming for breakthroughs to combat brain disease. The new Kimel Family Centre for Brain Health and Wellness, directed by Dr. Chertkow, will be a research setting that provides exercise, diet and mental stimulation classes, and psychological support, for middle-age and older individuals. Therapies will be tracked and the data will help answer the key question: How can we prevent the onset of cognitive loss and dementia? Our researchers also maintain collaborations across North and South America, the Middle East and the Asia Pacific region. Forty-two per cent of Baycrest research publications are co-authored with institutions in other countries. These networks and collaborations mean that our experts are disseminating their findings to other researchers and clinicians around the globe, and their own studies are informed by the research of others in their fields. 36
