Baycrest Volunteer Handbook 24 • Volunteering takes place on the Baycrest premises only, unless escorting clients on a Baycrest-organized outing How to transport someone in a Broda chair The Broda chair is a tilt and recline wheelchair, used for people who are unable to sit in a standard upright wheelchair. Most of the Broda chairs at Baycrest have four small caster wheels and are therefore mainly for indoor use. The chairs may be pushed outdoors, but only on flat terrain and on very small ramps like the flattened edge of a sidewalk. The foot-operated lever, located by the rear wheels, has three positions that: • Make the wheels straight, allowing the chair to be moved easily in a straight line • Allow the rear wheels to swivel so the chair can be turned within a small space • Lock the rear wheels and act as a b rake Caution • Do not tip or lift the chair to go up curbs • Do not reposition the angle or tilt of the chair. This should be done by a staff member General tips Please check with nursing staff regarding specific needs of your client when escorting. • Always walk on the opposite side of your client's cane • Clients who use walkers should be monitored by walking beside them. Check with staff for further instructions
