Baycrest Volunteer Handbook 39 Accessibility • Baycrest strives to respect the dignity and independence of people with disabilities • Disabilities may be visible or non-visible. One cannot always tell who has a disability • In 2005, the Government of Ontario passed the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The goal of this law is to make Ontario accessible by 2025 by creating and enforcing accessibility standards. These standar ds are rules that address key areas of daily life, such as customer service, information and communications, employment, transportation and the design of public spaces. The requirements of these standards are described in regulations under the AODA called the Integrated Accessibility Standards • The Ontario Human Rights Code (Code) and the AODA work together in various ways to promote equality and a ccessibility. The goal of the Code is to provide for equal rights and create a climate of respect where everyone feels part of the community and can contribute fully.
