Baycrest Volunteer Handbook
14
On the Jewish Sabbath (Shabbat, which runs from sundown Friday
to sundown Saturday) and other Jewish holy days, volunteers are
expected to respect their holiness and conduct themselves
accordingly.
In the public domain, regular activities will be modified in keeping
with the spirit and practices of the holy days, with the principle of
respecting the sanctity for our clients an
d their families.
The following activities are not allowed in the public domain space:
• Use of musical instruments
• Display of videos, movies and television
• Use of cameras and cell phones
Private spaces such as patient rooms are for the patient/client and
their family to use as they wish.
Volunteers are invited to spend quality time to visit with clients in
keeping with the social and community nature of
these holidays,
and
to tap into this time as an opportunity for relationship-
building, for connecting and being with clients.
Non-sectarian services at Baycrest
In addition to our Jewish cultural and religious programs, we have
many programs such as Christmas and Easter programs/parties,
ecumenical services, and Christian, Roman Catholic and Muslim
chaplains to meet the spiritual needs of our non-Jewish
clients.
A
multi-faith room is located on the first floor of the hospital across
from the Bathurst street entrance. This meditation room is a quiet
retreat where clients of all faiths can meet with family and clergy.
