Baycrest

THE AZRIELI FOUNDATION CAFÉ EUROPA The Café Europa is a social and recreational program for Holocaust survivors who reside in the community or at Baycrest. The name comes from a café in Sweden where survivors met after the Second World War to try to find family and friends. The supportive and welcoming environment facilitates: • Socializing • Reminiscing, relaxing and connecting • Celebrating Jewish holidays with music, readings and food The team running The Azrieli Foundation Café Europa includes a social worker, a recreationist and a nurse who monitors safety and is available for further consultation if required. Café Europa has been in operation at Baycrest since November 2006. It began with a one-time grant from the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, and continues now, thanks to the generosity of donors. Music that evokes special memories is an important part of the program. Participants also interact with students from local schools and universities who volunteer in the program, connect with survivors and listen to, as well as document, their stories of survival. MUSIC MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND! Glee clubs aren't just for high school! Every week, 10-15 members of the Samuel Lunenfeld Mountainview Club raise their voices in song. The donor-funded program, Buddy's Glee Club, also meets at the Apotex Centre, Jewish Home for the Aged, the Terraces of Baycrest and the Freeman Family Day Centre. Music plays an important role in holistic care at Baycrest because it sparks memories and adds to a sense of well-being and community for people who have health concerns and/ or dementia. 11 The program is free for Holocaust survivors.
