3 Construction has begun on floors three and four to convert the apartments to assisted living suites for the comfort and safety of residents with physical challenges, primarily mobility issues, Fanizza explains. Residents on these floors need someone with them regularly and they will be able to get whatever care supports they need for such things as dressing, bathing, taking medications and mealtime assistance. Assisted living residents will have the flexibility to eat breakfast and lunch on the floor when they want. Then they can go to the main floor dining room for dinner and to socialize with other residents. A second, smaller, main floor dining room is being planned for residents who require mealtime assistance. A third, informal dining option will be a café where all residents can order small meals during the day. Extensive renovations to the second floor will create a secure memory care unit with 15 spacious suites for residents with cognitive issues, an on-floor dining room, a rooftop terrace and program areas. Services will include 24/7 nursing care, medical care and recreational programs. "It will be very much a small community where people with memory issues will get the best kind of care and support based on Baycrest's knowledge and expertise in brain health and aging," Fanizza says. "This is truly unmatched. We have not seen this kind of support in a retirement residence anywhere else." Completion of the Terraces renovation is expected by spring 2020.
