I n November, Baycrest adopted the long-term care (LTC) sector's leading electronic health record software, PointClickCare (PCC), for the Apotex Centre, Jewish Home for the Aged. It is Baycrest's largest new electronic medical record system implementation in more than 20 years. PCC provides tools for both clinical and non-clinical staff and enables enhanced communication among the care team. "It's a game changer for us," says Rheta Fanizza, Executive Vice President, Residential and Community Programs. "All members of the care team can access the information that's appropriate for them and update the record at the bedside. This new electronic health record system supports the needs of LTC and all the provincial regulations and reporting requirements, so it will be helpful on many fronts." Many of the goals targeted through the implementation are already materializing. These include more efficient allocation of clinical resources relative to resident diagnosis and healthcare needs, the ability to track clinical documentation, accuracy and timelines, capturing information at point-of-care documentation, medication ordering, tracking and administration, resident assessments, tasks and care assignments. "At their fingertips, our care staff now benefits from this robust reporting system and analytic tools, which allow them to monitor resident care," comments Andrew Pigou, Program Director eHealth and project co-lead. "The team can instantly pinpoint opportunities to improve care, and take positive action through guidance and development." 8 Enhancing safety efficiency and client experience with PointClickCare Rheta Fanizza, Executive Vice President, Residential and Community Programs "... tools allow them to monitor resident care performance on a daily basis."
