9 Advanced technologies are now in place which maximize the availability of e-health records, optimizing uptake and adoption. These include fully mobile computerized medication administration carts, treatments carts and iPads, which operate across a sophisticated wireless infrastructure. The e-health record system includes several tools for clinical assessment, evaluation and interventions. One example is the electronic Hospital Tracking Portal, intended to track and reduce patient transfers to hospitals. Other examples include interprofessional communication and documentation tools, such as physician electronic order entry and referrals between interprofessional team members. This system will also allow nursing staff to efficiently distribute medications and gain valuable time for more bedside care. This feature is expected to reduce the risk of medication administration errors and omissions while also ensuring compliance. "Nurses are better supported during medication administration by a more comprehensive resident chart and documentation flow," noted Oksana Valoroso, PCC project coordinator, who has also practiced as a nurse in the Apotex. Baycrest is not only meeting the industry standard, but is surpassing it with the development of the physician documentation tools led by Dr. Andrea Moser, Apotex Associate Medical Director and Chief Medical Information Officer. Dr. Moser points out that "Baycrest is the first LTC home in Canada using the platform to implement computerized physician order entry (CPOE)." "Nurses are better supported during medication administration by a more comprehensive resident chart..." Visit baycrest.org for more information.
