W elcome to the latest edition of BrainMatters magazine, bringing you timely information on brain-healthy living and ways to optimize your well-being. Baycrest is now firmly into its second century of brain health research, education, care and innovation. As we move forward, innovations in aging are front and centre in helping people of all ages adjust their lifestyle habits in order to delay the onset of dementia. More than a million Canadians are affected directly or indirectly by dementia and our work is needed more than ever. It is only through the generosity of our community that our efforts to hold back the rising tide of Alzheimer's and other dementias can succeed. Among other subjects, this issue of BrainMatters highlights some of the new ways innovations and technologies are being used in the fight against dementia. In our cover story, we invite you to meet Hockey Hall of Famer and Toronto Maple Leafs icon, Darryl Sittler. Named one of Hockey's Greatest 100 players of all time, Sittler also holds a record that may never be broken – scoring 10 points in one game. This year, he will be a special ambassador at the Scotiabank Pro-Am for Alzheimer's in support of Baycrest. Read why he teamed up with Baycrest to "Stick it to Alzheimer's" and how important the cause is to him. Elsewhere in the magazine, we serve up tips on making a brain-healthy smoothie, feature an inspirational story from a leading dementia researcher, discuss how to deal with stress, and answer the question: "Is it my memory or is it hearing loss?" Plus much, much more. Our scientists continue to investigate therapies and lifestyle choices that will help our brains function their best. Ongoing research is leading directly to innovations in caregiving and in the programs we offer here in Toronto, across Canada and worldwide. Please play a role in supporting our ongoing mission to improve brain health for people at every age. Call our Donations Office at 416-785-2875 or visit baycrestfoundation.org.
