Research Training Centre The Research Training Centre (RTC) is a unit dedicated to the technical, professional, and career development of the next generation of scientific leaders. Through expert-led lectures and workshops, internships, and public outreach initiatives, the RTC provides trainees with opportunities to build technical and leadership skills; network with scientific leaders in academia, industry, government, and not-for-profit organizations; and explore various career options. DEMYSTIFYING NEUROSCIENCE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS Nathan Kalfon had always been interested in computers and science. As he prepared to pursue post-secondary education, the Grade 12 student had a chance to see a real-world example of these two areas coming together through Baycrest's neuroBRITE (Baycrest Research Innovation and Technology Education) program. "I was struck by the fact that the program offered a chance to do a professional experiment," says Kalfon, a student at John Polanyi Collegiate Institute. "It was great to see a practical use of work in these two areas and produce results." The neuroBRITE initiative was created to educate high schoolers about the field of cognitive neuroscience. Students were provided the opportunity to run their own experiments under the mentorship of the Rotman Research Institute's Research Training Centre, Research Training Centre SAMPLE WORKSHOPS Open Science Workshop May 2018 Model Building and Analysis of Binary Data June 2018 Word Nerd 101 - Methodological Considerations for Linguistic Stimuli in Psychology and Neuroscience Experiments October 2018 Neurite Orientation Dispersion and Density Imaging (NODDI) October 2018 Basics of Scientific Computing November 2018 Neuroimaging and Neurostimulation November 2018, February 2019 Clinical Research Skills January & March 2019 Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) February 2019 17 international and local experts taught trainees 12 workshops on research skills and professional development 150+ workshop attendees 700+ Rotman Rounds attendees 22 ROTMAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE
