Launched an ambitious international project to develop the world's first integrated computer model of a fully functioning human brain to better understand and test different diagnostic and treatment options for neurodegenerative disorders, such as dementia. Baycrest installed its first magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. When paired with other tools at Baycrest, this technology allowed researchers to provide a comprehensive view of brain function. Dr. Jennifer Ryan, recognized for her research using eye movements and MEG, was named a Canada Research Chair in the Cognitive Neuroscience of Memory. Dr. Cheryl Grady, recognized for her expertise in brain imaging technology, was named a Canada Research Chair in Neurocognitive Aging. Dr. Gordon Winocur, a leader in cognitive neuroscience methods, was appointed the Vice- President of Research at Baycrest. Dr. Bruce Pollock, recognized for his leadership in geriatric psychiatry, was appointed the second Sandra A. Rotman Chair in Neuropsychiatry. The FDA approved the use of the multiple auditory steady-state evoked response (MASTER) technology, developed by Baycrest researchers, which revolutionized how babies get their hearing checked. The software was adopted by hospitals across the world. Baycrest became one of the first institutions in Canada to acquire magnetoencephalography (MEG) technology, which allowed researchers to map a person's brain activity by measuring its magnetic fields. Baycrest appointed Dr. Christo Pantev as its first Canada Research Chair, a prestigious position created by the Government of Canada. Dr. Donald Stuss, RRI founder and a leading neuropsychologist, was awarded the first Reva James Leeds Chair in Neuroscience and Research Leadership. Dr. Elsa Marziali, a leading researcher in the area of social services for older adults, was appointed the first Norman and Honey Schipper Chair in Gerontological Social Work. 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2000 2008 2009 2010 Uncovered the first clear evidence that bilingualism delays the onset of dementia. 2018–2019 YEAR IN REVIEW 25 Dr. Randy McIntosh, a leading cognitive neuroscientist, was appointed Vice-President of Research at Baycrest, Director of the Rotman Research Institute, and Reva James Leeds Chair in Neuroscience and Research Leadership. Pioneered a line of inquiry exploring a unique memory advantage possessed by older adults. Dr. Tomáš Paus, a pioneer in the emerging field of "population neuroscience," was appointed the Anne and Max Tanenbaum Chair in Cognitive Neuroscience.
