Moving Forward Planning a research-driven, community centre Planning is underway for the Kimel Family Centre for Brain Health and Wellness, which is expected to open in 2020. This research-driven, community centre will be the first of its kind in Toronto. It will not only deliver evidence-based, dementia prevention strategies, but will also be an innovation hub and trial site for new brain health interventions. Servicing both residents of the Terraces of Baycrest and people from the broader community, members of the centre will have the opportunity to obtain a dementia risk evaluation and access a suite of lifestyle interventions to help maintain good brain health. These interventions will include exercise programs, nutrition counselling, meditation and mindfulness activities, sensory and cognitive training, brain stimulation, and creative activities. In addition to regular, ongoing programs, space will be available for researchers and trainees to trial new interventions promoting brain health and wellness. Accelerating research through open science No single researcher or institute can tackle the complex challenges of an aging population alone. Open science and international partnerships are the future of science - a future that Baycrest is fully embracing. The next great idea to stop dementia in its tracks may come from the RRI, or it may come from someone in Toledo, Tokyo, or Tel Aviv. By providing access to our vast and unique datasets to scientists from around the world, we are creating a pathway to accelerate research, discovery, and innovation that will benefit Baycrest clients and the wider global community. RRI scientists are developing a set of Open Science Principles that embody the spirit of making our science as accessible as possible. Online platforms are also being designed to share data and tools so that researchers from around the world can build on the ground- breaking research being conducted at Baycrest. 30 ROTMAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE
