Besides outdoor activities, many exercise programs have switched from in-person classes to online instruction. Many classes are also available for free. This is a great option for everyone, including those who may not be able to get outside. "Staying active using technology doesn't have to be complicated," says Sylvia. "We just need to be patient as we learn how to use a new device, program or app. As with anything new, I encourage you to try it and see if it works for you." Why is it so important to exercise? As we age, exercise is vital to ensure that our joints and muscles stay in shape, and to help maintain numerous other essential functions throughout the body. In addition, research tells us that there is a connection between heart health and brain health. Exercise helps us to reduce our chances of developing cardiovascular disease and to maintain blood flow to the brain, which in turn reduces dementia risk. "Now more than ever, it's important that we stay physically active in a safe way, and there are several options to do so." As well, exercise is beneficial for our mental and emotional well-being. It can be useful in managing stress, which can also decrease the risk of developing dementia. To help decrease anxiety and improve mood as we head into fall, Sylvia suggests embracing a new skill or form of exercise, such as virtual chair exercise classes or yoga. This fall and winter season, don't let the colder weather and the pandemic be an excuse to be sedentary. Be mindful about the best ways to get exercise to suit your needs and circumstances – your brain will thank you. BrainMatters FALL|WINTER 2020 9 TAKE A VIRTUAL WALK WITH MARVIN Marvin Gord has led an extraordinary life. He is 99 years old and walks five kilometres every day around his neighbourhood. He will celebrate his 100th birthday on December 31, 2020, at the turn of the calendar year. Between now and his birthday, Marvin is on a mission to walk 1 MILLION STEPS and raise $1 MILLION (or more!) for Baycrest's SOS Campaign, which funds critical protective measures and medical equipment to safeguard residents, patients, and staff who deliver care; and equipment for clinicians to treat patients via telemedicine, and for patients and residents to connect with families. You can walk "alongside" Marvin too! Take a virtual walk with Marvin in any way you like. Get on a treadmill, an elliptical machine, or go for a walk around your neighbourhood.
