8 BrainMatters FALL|WINTER 2020 STAYING HEALTHY DURING A PANDEMIC FALL/WINTER SEASON T his year has been intense as we have all tried to adjust to the continually evolving COVID-19 pandemic. Over the summer, many older adults and people of all ages found ways to get outdoors and engage in physically distanced fitness activities to stay healthy. However, the prospect of exercising outdoors may seem less appealing in the fall and winter months, as temperatures drop, the snow falls and days get shorter. For some, it may be difficult or even impossible to go outside at all. Below are tips on getting some exercise this season while staying protected against COVID-19. "Exercise can be useful in managing stress, which can also decrease the risk of developing dementia." "Now more than ever, it's important that we stay physically active in a safe way, and there are several options to do so," says Sylvia Davidson, Hospital Manager and Professional Practice Chief - Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy & Therapeutic Recreation, at Baycrest. First, it is critical to maintain physical distancing when leaving your home or family "bubble". Activities like biking, walks around the neighbourhood or on hiking trails, snowshoeing and cross- country skiing should be carefully planned and routed for maximum distancing. Preparation for colder weather activities is also important. At this time of year, purchasing comfortable and warm outdoor clothing will help to properly regulate body temperature. With the growth and specialization of online shopping, these days it is easier than ever to find your fit, whether it be a fall jacket, wool socks, winter gloves or crampon attachments for shoes and boots. Getting an early jump on buying active wear that suits your needs will go a long way in the winter months.
