RESEARCH AND
INNOVATION
ROTMAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE
The Rotman Research Institute (RRI) was founded
through the generosity and vision of Joseph Rotman
and the Rotman family. Today it has grown to become a
premier international centre for the study of aging and
human brain function, making Baycrest one of the top 10
most research-intensive hospitals in Canada.
RRI's world-renowned scientists promote effective
care and improve the quality of life of older adults
through their research. Research in neuroscience and
aging at the RRI has led to groundbreaking discoveries
that reveal the mysteries of the human brain, adding
to our understanding of brain function and building
the foundation to help stem the tide of dementia.
Researchers have discovered how our brain's memory
systems work; how the brain can focus on what matters
and how that changes with age; showed how older
brains rewire themselves to perform as well as possible
as we age; demonstrated bilingualism's protective
effects against dementia; shown how eating well is
linked to good brain health; developed systems to help
older adults understand speech better in crowds, and
created a virtual brain to speed up diagnosis and the
development of treatments for dementia, epilepsy and
other neurodegenerative diseases.
