BAYCREST VIEWBOOK 2021 | 35 RESEARCH TRAINING CENTRE The Rotman Research Institute's Research Training Centre (RTC) is dedicated to the technical, professional and career development of the next generation of scientific leaders. Through expert-led lectures and workshops, internships and public outreach initiatives, the RTC provides trainees with opportunities to build technical and leadership skills; network with scientific leaders in academia, industry, government and not-for-profit organizations; and explore various career options. KATZ INTERPROFESSIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM IN GERIATRIC AND DEMENTIA CARE Through the Ben & Hilda Katz Research, Education and Care Endowment Fund, Baycrest fuels innovative interprofessional research to improve the lives of older adults and those living with dementia. One of the goals is to link RRI scientists with professionals across the campus to apply research in practical settings. Ongoing work in the Katz program includes: • Improving falls prevention plans with real-time falls detection in long-term care (with nursing, OT, PT, physicians). • Examining the effects of neurofeedback during mindfulness meditation in people with mild cognitive impairment (with physicians, psychology). • Investigating the impact of cognitive training and stimulating leisure activity (learning Spanish or music) on cognition in older adults with subjective memory decline (with OT, Speech-Language Pathology, Music). • Testing the effects of an exercise and nutrition intervention on cognition in older adults with subjective memory decline (with exercise physiologists, OT). • Developing education and awareness on ageism and the importance of involving older people in research (with social work) • Creating public resources and fact sheets about social isolation, mobility and precarity (with social work) For more information, contact Dr. Nicole Anderson at 416-785-2500 ext. 3366.
