19 # N O B L A N K B R A I N S Artist Statement Campbell explored how the brain is affected by music. In the centre of the piece, certain parts of the brain are depicted in gold, such as the hippocampus and the hypothalamus. In certain parts of the brain, music has been thought to increase neurogenesis, allowing the production of new neurons and improving memory. The way the brain responds to music is a beautiful mystery; it creates a landscape for our memories to dwell in, like a beautiful garden of memories. Even in the throes of Alzheimer's, music can bring back parts of our loved ones that we thought were already lost. It is a light in the darkness we all sometimes find ourselves in. Brain health means everything to me. The brain is who we are. When I lost my father to Alzheimer's it was not only awful to go through but also put a fear in me of losing myself in the same way some day. I want to do everything I can to live as healthfully as possible so I can be around a long, long time for those I love. The Brain Project was a great way to raise awareness and consciousness about health and how the way we treat our bodies now can affect us years down the road. " "
