In close collaboration with, and curated by, veteran documentarian Andrea Simon, רעש Sha'ar: Song of the Gate invites viewers from all traditions to actively engage in a multi-generational conversation on Jewish history and spiritual practice over 3,000 years. According to Goldman, the exhibit aims to inspire viewers to move through a gate into "a space of richness, paradox, longing, hope and transformation. The gate functions as a unifying principle, visually, aurally and conceptually/spiritually." She further explains: "There are so many historical connections. Some works offer this image as a metaphor for the unique position of the Jews in history, others, more mystical connections. Throughout, it's an almost brutally direct expression of this moment, when we are all so tired of being shut inside, in isolation, swimming in this shapeless, vague, undefined present, longing to be free." Spiraling out from a medieval Hebrew love song, Deborah Bennett-Kagan's fiery abstract paintings and Samantha Goldman's exquisite mixed media and paper cuts inspire re-imaginings of traditional Jewish folk art and calligraphy through a modern lens. The work will be displayed inside The Ronald and Nancy Kalifer Culture Hub on the ground floor of Baycrest's Apotex building and will feature sculptural works, sound sculpture, suspended hand-cut Mylar sculptures, works on canvas and other historical artifacts and elements. VILLA CHARITIES Another cultural association participating in the Expo is Villa Charities, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Italian heritage through educational and cultural programs. Villa Charities' exhibit, The Quiet Immigrant, celebrates Italian women who immigrated to Canada after the Second World War through a striking photography display on-site at the Columbus Centre (901 Lawrence Ave W.), beginning April 24, 2022, for two months. This homage celebrates their stories of bravery, determination and sacrifice as they settled into a new country.
