20 • BrainMatters • Fall/Winter 2022 BAYCREST'S KIMEL FAMILY CENTRE FOR BRAIN HEALTH AND WELLNESS IS OFFICIALLY OPEN ENCOURAGING COGNITIVE AND SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT It's important to keep your brain engaged and maintain social connections as you age to reduce your risk of cognitive decline. Classes, programs and social opportunities go a long way in helping older adults stay healthy, mentally sharp and vibrant. Members of the Kimel Family Centre will have access to social programming and educational courses such as community discussion groups, lecture series and computer training. Canadians are aging faster now than any time before, and with aging comes an increased risk of cognitive decline. There is currently no effective medication on the market to treat dementia, making it critical that we do what we can to prevent cognitive decline as we age. Baycrest's newly opened Kimel Family Centre for Brain Health and Wellness is a first-of-its-kind community centre focused on dementia prevention. The spacious, state-of-the-art facility brings in the community for wellness programs and integrated research to prevent cognitive decline. The Kimel Family Centre integrates brain health workshops, physical fitness, nutrition, sensory and cognitive training, arts programs and social engagement for older adults. The centre's highly experienced team will create personalized brain health prescriptions that incorporate these offerings to help older adults live longer and healthier lives while participating in critical research on dementia prevention.
