ARTS & CULTURE PROGRAMMING WELCOMED BACK As our community continues to navigate the pandemic and looks to bring back some of our pre-COVID-19 activities, Baycrest has begun a return to in-person arts and culture programming for our residents and patients in new and innovative ways. One innovation launched this year is the Sharing Dance Older Adults app, created in partnership with Canada's National Ballet School. "With this app, we have the opportunity to support the abilities of people living with dementia to feel empowered and expressive through dance," says Emily Sitter, Arts in Health Project Coordinator, Baycrest. Pre-recorded dance classes can be used in a therapeutic program and adapted for individual needs. "Some people have been pretty isolated, so it's a bright moment in their day when they can do something creative," says Susie Whaley, Creative Arts Worker, Baycrest. "I try to set them up for success. No right or wrong way. Just a world of possibilities." Adapting to people's abilities and responding to what they are interested in has guided the activities offered by Baycrest's Arts & Culture team. In addition to virtual programs, one-to-one and small group programming are occurring at the Apotex Centre, Jewish Home for the Aged, as well as Baycrest Hospital. As Baycrest continues to conduct research and learn more about cognitive stimulation through social engagement, the Arts & Culture team and therapeutic recreationists will continue to evolve their offerings for the aging population on our campus.
