BrainMatters • Spring/Summer 2023 • 3 REIMAGINING THE AGING EXPERIENCE THROUGH INNOVATION Over the next two decades, Canada's older population (aged 65+) is expected to grow by 68 per cent to over 10.4 million people. 1 Technology- driven innovations can radically transform how Canada attends to the growing needs of older adults, families and caregivers, while greatly enhancing quality of life. Since 2015, the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation (CABHI), powered by Baycrest, has funded over 280 technology-driven innovations and introduced 130 of them into real-world settings. Not only are these innovations supporting older adults, families and caregivers in their everyday lives, but they are also helping healthcare providers better diagnose and treat patients. Ultimately, they are helping older adults thrive and live their best lives in the setting of their choice. These innovations are funded by programs like CABHI's Mentorship, Capital, and Continuation (MC 2 ) Program, in partnership with National Bank — a funding program supporting early-stage agetech companies. 1 According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information. To hear more about CABHI-supported projects, including the latest innovations showcased during CABHI's annual summit, tune in to the Community of Innovation podcast for special summit episodes. Visit cabhi.com to learn more. Below are some examples of CABHI's recent MC 2 supported companies and products. • InteraXon Muse brain-sensing headbands provide people with real-time information about their brain activity, heartbeat, breathing and body movements. Among other uses, these headbands make it easier to learn meditation, as they allow people to see how their body responds as they meditate. • iGuardStove from iGuard Home Solutions Inc. is an easy to use motion sensor and adjustable countdown timer that automatically shuts off a stove after five minutes of inactivity to prevent home cooking fires. • Hypercare is a digital platform that helps healthcare teams communicate with each other, send important messages fast and find each other without going through a switchboard or call centre. This supports patient care by improving team communication and allowing colleagues to know who's available when needed. • iRegained develops products and services to help people recover from physical injuries. They are especially helpful for people who have trouble using their hands due to a brain injury resulting from a stroke or accident. • Curv offers healthcare providers a set of digital tools to run their virtual clinics, including remote monitoring tools that make it easier for patients to follow treatments at home. This increases the accessibility of these services while allowing flexibility for healthcare providers. • Perceiv AI uses artificial intelligence to predict how diseases will progress based on information from different sources, like clinical data and blood tests. The tool helps researchers better design clinical trials and doctors make more informed decisions about patients' health.
