BrainMatters • Spring/Summer 2023 • 1 Josh Cooper President & CEO Baycrest Foundation FEARLESS THINKING Welcome to the latest edition of BrainMatters magazine, bringing you timely information on brain healthy living and ways to optimize your well-being. Baycrest is working to change the future of aging. Our Fear No Age™ fundraising and awareness campaign has inspired our community with the hope that one day, we will defeat dementia. We continue serving older adults, their families and caregivers with world-leading aging and brain health care, as we have done for more than 105 years. We are also at the forefront of research into brain health. I am pleased to let you know that Baycrest is currently involved in 16 different therapy and intervention research studies to treat and prevent dementia. In fact, Baycrest has more ongoing therapy studies in dementia than any other centre in Canada, thanks to our generous and supportive community. Our cover story is an interview with Carolyn Mackenzie, a decorated broadcast journalist and the host of Global TV's national a.m. talk show program The Morning Show. Carolyn discusses how dementia impacted her family and how it taught her the importance of staying brain healthy. Elsewhere, we are looking forward to the return of the Mattamy Homes Bike for Brain Health in support of Baycrest. In its first year, this incredible cycling event raised more than $3 million! This year, it will be even bigger and better, with thousands more cyclists taking part. We interview some of the captains of the cycling teams who will be returning for the 2023 ride, and we discuss what makes the event so special for them. Interested in riding the DVP with us? You can register today at bikeforbrainhealth.ca. We also share important stories about our new Driving With Dementia Roadmap, which supports those on their driving with dementia journey; a new drug therapy for dementia with comments from one of our leading scientists in brain health; how virtual reality technology is helping support long-term care residents; a spring recipe that is both tasty and brain healthy… and much, much more! Our advances in brain health science are not possible without the generosity of our community of donors, volunteers, staff, residents and their families. Please play a role in supporting all our efforts to defeat dementia. Call our Donations Office at 416-785-2875, and make your gift to Baycrest by visiting baycrest.org. Now more than ever, we need your help. Fund fearlessness. Wishing you a safe, healthy and happy spring and summer. Josh Cooper, President & CEO, Baycrest Foundation
