Any claim will be hotly debated, and the discoveries of the James Webb Space Telescope will probably give us more questions than answers. As we discover the vast diversity of extremophile life on Earth, our minds can only begin to imagine the possibilities for life to exist on other planets. This talk will cover the challenges and hope for detecting the first signs of life on another planet. 6 week program, fixed Mondays, October 30; November 6, 13, 20, 27; December 4 12:30 p.m. - 2 p.m. Activity Room B Class size: 12 Writing Through Reading: Exploring Memoir & Non-Fiction Continued Education/Creative Writing Risk Factors: social connections, cognitive engagement Instructor: Harriet Alida Lye Engage in close-readings of extracts from memoirs and works of non-fiction in a group setting to explore writers' intentions, word choices, story, and how the texts make us feel as readers. Using these written examples as prompts, we will participate in class writing exercises with the option of sharing and work-shopping within the group. 6 week program, fixed Sundays, October 22, 29; November 5, 12, 19, 26 2:30 p.m. - 4 p.m. Activity Room B Class size: 15 Found Poetry Continued Education/Creative Writing Risk Factors: social connections, cognitive engagement Instructor: Hanan Hazime Poetry is everywhere, you just need to find it! Found Poetry is the literary equivalent of a visual collage: you combine concepts and phrases from multiple media (like newspapers, magazines, books, diary entries, and even to-do lists) to create new, "found poems''. Whether you've never written a poem or you're a seasoned poet, this class is for anyone looking to explore poetry in a new, fun way! Please note: bring a notebook with you. 6 week program, fixed Thursdays, October 19, 26; November 2, 9, 16, 23 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. Activity Room B Class size: 24 Asian Cultures in Canada: An Introduction Continued Education/Canadian Studies Risk Factors: social connections, cognitive engagement Instructor: Dr. Serene Tam This course explores elements of the cultural histories and creative productions of Asian communities in Canada. The term Asian Canadian is widely understood to refer to people in Canada of Asian ancestry, including and not limited to East, Southeast, South, and West Asian. Together, we will examine a range of Asian Canadian literature, film, and cultural media. By taking this course, you will gain a better understanding of the production and consumption of Asian Canadian cultures, as well as the role of culture in influencing Asian Canadian identities.
