6 week program, fixed On Monday, Oct 16, 23, 30; Nov 6, 27 from 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m . On Tuesday, Nov 14 from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Creative Arts Studio Class size: 8 Crochet a Granny Square (and Build a Collaborative Blanket) Needlecraft/Crocheting Risk Factors: social connections, cognitive engagement Instructor: Liza Wallman In this six week beginner class, we will learn how to crochet, with our final creation being a granny square blanket (that we hope to gift to a resident or patient at Baycrest). Our first class will focus on the stitches we will use for the project, and how to create one granny square. In classes 2-4 we will keep working on making granny squares and create enough squares to make a blanket. Then, in classes 5-6 we will learn how to connect those squares and weave in the ends to create a finished blanket! A one-day workshop Friday, November 3 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Creative Arts Studio Class size: 7 Introductory Letterpress Techniques Printmaking/Letterpress Risk Factors: social connections, cognitive engagement Instructor: Phoebe Todd-Parrish Try your hand at letterpress printing by learning how to use a sign-press and small tabletop press. We will also discuss the history of these presses and address your questions about letterpress work. You will even get the chance to set wood and metal type to produce your own poster or notecard set. 6 week program, fixed Wednesdays, November 15, 22, 29; December 6, 13, 20 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. Activity Room B Class size: 14 Stitching Memories: Storytelling Through Sewing and Embroidery Needlecraft/Sewing & Embroidery Risk Factors: social connections, cognitive engagement Instructor: Haley Anderson and Sabine Saber This workshop series is specifically designed for those who are interested in exploring creative storytelling through sewing and embroidery. You will learn valuable sewing and embroidery skills and explore and share personal stories in a supportive environment. By creating personalized memory pillows, you will delve into your creativity and craft a tangible keepsake. one-day workshop Monday, December 4 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Creative Arts Studio Class size: 12 The Art of the Fold: Origami Workshop Sculpture/Origami Risk Factors: social connections, cognitive engagement Instructor: Alex Yue and Matthew Edell Learn the Japanese art of Origami. It's not nearly as hard as you might think, and can actually be a great way to meet new people and focus your mind. We will make various animals and objects, which you can use to decorate your space or give to a friend. 6 week program, fixed Mondays, October 23, 30; November 6, 13, 20, 27 10 a.m. - 11:30 p.m. Creative Arts Studio Class size: 10 The Art of the Photographic Portrait Photography/Lifestyle Photography Risk Factors: social connections, cognitive engagement Instructor: Cindy Blaževic This is a course about exploring the creative process of creating a photographic portrait. We will talk about identity, race, gender, culture, and agency when thinking about how we use photography to define ourselves, visually, in the world. You will learn portrait styles and techniques, both historical and contemporary, and we will work towards creating our own portraits by the end of the course. No prior experience necessary. This will be a safe, empathetic space where we will spend much time exploring and working together. 3 6 week program, fixed Fridays, October 20, 27; November 3, 10, 17, 24 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Creative Arts Studio Class size: 18 The First Steps of Lettering: Calligraphy for Beginners Graphics 7 Text-Based Arts/Calligraphy Risk Factors: social connections, cognitive engagement Instructor: Michelle Nidenoff If you've ever wanted to explore the art of calligraphy, this is the class for you. You will learn a basic calligraphy lettering style, various pen strokes, and letterforms including upper and lower case. We will then apply these skills to several small projects.
