What does art mean to us? How do we approach art? How do we understand artistic expression? series of 2 lectures Tuesdays, December 5 and 12 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. Activity Room B Class size: 30 9 week program, fixed Thursdays, October 19, 26; November 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; December 7 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Activity Room B Class size: 12 Spanish 101 Continued Education/Language Risk Factors: social connections, cognitive engagement Instructor: Nikita Sankreacha The best part about learning a new language is connecting with a new culture! As such, this course will be broken down into two parts: first, we will spend some time learning the foundations of the Spanish language, and then we will end each class with an activity/lecture related to Spanish culture. You will learn to use the present tense, explore the relationship between nouns and gender, and introducing yourself and talking about likes and dislikes, food, travel, and the days of the week/months of the year. Ready to embrace the Spanish-speaking world and its diverse culture? Join us for what is sure to be a fun time! 9 week program, fixed Tuesdays, Octpber 24, 31; November 7, 14, 21, 28; December 5, 12, 19 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Activity Room B Class size: 12 Yiddish Level 1 Continued Education/Language Risk Factors: social connections, cognitive engagement Instructor: Benjamin Miller In this introductory class, we will learn the Yiddish alphabet, the basics of Yiddish grammar, and some basic Yiddish vocabulary. Yiddish history and arts will be woven throughout. No prior experience is needed, but if you feel as though you have too much knowledge, feel free to come and help teach the class! By the end of this course, we will aim for you to feel comfortable reading phonetically in Yiddish, recognize basic sentence structure, understand 100 words of common vocabulary, appreciate the rich background of Yiddish, and make some friends with whom you can keep learning Yiddish. series of 2 lectures Sundays, December 3 and 10 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Activity Room B Class size: 30 Welcome to the Symphony: A Historical Exploration of the Genre's Past and Present Lectures/Musicology Risk Factors: social connections, cognitive engagement Instructor: Dr. Lindsay Jones Become immersed in the field of musicology (the study of music history) by examining the symphony for the unique musical genre that it is. Through musical demonstrations and guided listening exercises, you will explore the compositional features of symphonic works, and critically investigate the social, political, and cultural climate in which these pieces were written. Your newfound understanding of how to creatively engage with the cultural contexts of these pieces will make you a hit at your next dinner party, and just might result in adding some symphonies to your next playlist!
