16 • BrainMatters • Fall/Winter 2023 Despite the recent challenges experienced across the healthcare sector, with the generous support of donors Baycrest continues to provide patients and residents with innovative and engaging solutions that enhance their physical, mental and emotional health. THE GIFT OF SLEEP Sleep is important for brain health, but many older adults have trouble sleeping well. This can affect their memory and mood. Thanks to generous donors led by the Jeff and Honey Rubenstein Family, Baycrest recently purchased new beds and mattresses for its long-term care home and hospital. The beds are comfortable and adjustable, and they have features like night lights, USB ports and remote controls. In addition, they help prevent pressure ulcers and falls. Our residents, patients and staff love the new beds and say they are a great investment for Baycrest. HOW BAYCREST IS LEADING THE WAY TO IMPROVED QUALITY OF LIFE FOR OLDER ADULTS PROGRAMMING THAT ENHANCES QUALITY OF LIFE Thanks to generous funding from Baycrest Hospital Board member Ken Wiener and Linda Dagg, Baycrest recently renovated the balconies on each floor of the Apotex Centre to make them more comfortable and inviting for the residents. New chairs, tables, umbrellas and plants have been added to create a cozy and colourful outdoor space. The balconies are open to all residents, no matter their mobility or cognitive level. They offer a chance for the residents to breathe fresh air, see natural light and enjoy scenic views. They also serve as a place for socializing, relaxing and having fun. "It's so relaxing to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air and the beautiful view of the campus. I can see the gardens and sometimes even the birds. It makes me feel connected to nature and to the community," says one resident.
