BrainMatters •Fall/Winter 2024 • 19 Describe this tournament to someone who's never experienced it before. "In one-word... fun! All the guys and girls on all the teams are having a good time out there. Hockey is the best game in the world and we're getting a chance to use it to raise a lot of money, play at a great facility and enjoy ourselves for some good play and some ugly play and regardless of the outcome it's just a good time." What inspired you to get on the ice today? "Well I think it's important, we're all [aging], and making sure we're prepared as we get older. It's important to get a head start on issues and look out for other people." Mike Krushelnyski – Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings Favourite NHL Memory "That's easy, winning the Stanley Cup. Actually, it was winning my first Stanley Cup in '85 (going back a few years). Just today someone brought a photo for me to sign of Wayne Gretzky handing me that Stanley Cup, and someone brought another one of me scoring a goal in a Leafs uniform, so seeing those photos again is nostalgic for me too." What inspired you to get on the ice for Baycrest? "I was asked by Gordie Howe a long time ago, he said 'Michael I need you.' When Gordie speaks, people listen so I was affiliated with Alzheimer's way back then. I was lucky to know Gordie personally and we saw what he went through with his wife Colleen and then later himself so we're blessed that we are able to do something to help out and participate." The heartfelt stories shared by NHL and Olympic alumni highlight the profound impact that memories have on our lives.
