18 • BrainMatters • Fall/Winter 2024 NHL AND OLYMPIC LEGENDS JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST DEMENTIA In Canada, hockey legends aren't just names on jerseys, they're our household heroes. They're also often time stamps and memories in our lives, from one's first NHL game experience, to exhilarating playoff wins — or the heartbreaking defeats — of your favourite team. During our annual Pro-Am for Alzheimer's in support of Baycrest, participants and volunteers get a chance to connect with some of Canada's NHL and Olympic hockey icons: Eric Lindros, Shayne Corson, Mike Krushelnyski, Rebecca Johnston, Rick Vaive and many others. We asked them to share some of their best NHL memories and why they're dedicated to preserving those memories by supporting Baycrest's critical mission to defeat dementia. Shayne Corson - Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs, Dallas Stars Favourite NHL Memory "The friendships that I created over the years. For us, hockey ends at some point but those friendships last forever and you still have the people you can lean on when you're going through tough times." What inspired you to get involved with the Pro-Am Tournament? "I've been playing in this for a long time, it's one of my favorite tournaments — Baycrest cares so much and they do so much for the Alzheimer's cause and it's just fun to be a part of it. We are lucky to play a sport we love to play and get paid to do it, and to get to come back on the ice and play to help our communities and hospitals is well worth it." Eric Lindros – Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Dallas Stars Best NHL Memory "Anytime we got into the playoffs, game one of any playoff round especially in Philadephia had such a wonderful buzz and fantastic atmosphere as you get ready for the grind of trying to put together 16 wins over two and a half months. Playoff time is really the best time."
