Inspired by the Baycrest strategic plan 2013-18, which focuses on brain health and aging, the research five-year plan is grounded in the RRI's historic focus on cognitive neuroscience, and the belief that a basic understanding of brain functions like memory and attention will help us devise new ways to recognize and treat brain disease and disorders. Crafted by RRI scientists – leaders in the field of cognitive neuroscience – the research directions articulated in the plan emphasize our unique capacity and capabilities. The plan addresses three challenges: • to define the key elements that predict brain health as we age, focusing on the brain and our environment; • to better engage our clinical partners in defining the critical path for translational research so that there is a direct health benefit from our research; • to establish new mechanisms to share our knowledge and dynamic innovations, to strengthen RRI's position as a global leader in brain health research. The new BCR is helping to integrate research and care, an important part of the RRI's ongoing work in translating scientific discoveries about brain function and aging into new prevention, treatment and intervention strategies. BAYCREST SCIENTISTS RANKED AMONG THE MOST PRODUCTIVE AND SUCCESSFUL IN CANADA An assessment of the top 40 research hospitals in Canada conducted by Research InfoSource ranks Baycrest second in research funding with $584,200 per researcher compared to an average of $270,475 per researcher across the 40 hospitals.. BAYCREST RESEARCH ETHICS BOARD (REB) RECEIVES EXEMPLARY STATUS The Baycrest REB received qualification with exemplary standing on April 4, 2014. Baycrest received a 'green' rating in all 110 standards evaluated within the Toronto Academic Health Science Network (TAHSN) REB qualification manual. Qualification of TAHSN hospital REBs will simplify the process of conducting multisite research projects. 4
