24th ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON "MEMORY AND THE BRAIN IN HEALTH & DISEASE" Over 300 attendees from around the world attended the RRI conference on "Memory and the Brain in Health and Disease". Conference themes included: • Memory in attention, perception and recognition; • Memory for events, space and time; • Memory and aging; • Memory in sleep, dementia and depression; • Memory in the lab and the real world. Post-conference research and clinical workshops included interactive lectures and hands-on practice to help participants learn about and gain experience in (1) the assessment and treatment of memory in a clinical setting; (2) the assessment of sensory disorders and their impact on memory in aging; and (3) statistical and analytical techniques for conducting behavioural and functional neuroimaging research. CURRENT RESEARCH STUDIES BLOG Over the years, thousands of study participants have contributed to research of aging and the brain at the world-renowned RRI at Baycrest. RRI monthly blog The Aging Brain highlights current studies that promote effective care and improved quality of life of the elderly. Posts to the blog by Roshan Guna, Manager of Research Ethics and Participation, are featured on the Baycrest website, Baycrest Academic eNews and on O3, the Ontario Research and Innovation Optical Network (ORION) collaboration network. In September 2013 the blog was featured in Big Ideas newsletter which was circulated to over 200,000 members in the ORION network.Stretching 5,800 kilometres, with connection points in 21 communities throughout Ontario, more than 1.8 million researchers, scientists, faculty, teachers and students rely on ORION as their dedicated ultra-fast research and innovation network. BRAIN AWARENESS WEEK RRI partnered with the Dana Foundation for Brain Awareness Week 2014. The week was an inspiring view into how cutting-edge science helps us understand the human brain and how to live longer and healthier. Events over the course of the week included a panel discussion by RRI scientists, the Great Canadian Brain Games, a tour of RRI's neuroimaging technologies, a demo of eye- tracker technology, the RRI annual conference and a Research Expo. MINDfull, A BRAIN HEALTH COOKBOOK MINDfull, a brain health cookbook published by HarperCollins Canada, is now available on Amazon.ca, Indigo or in your local bookstore. It was created by Dr. Carol Greenwood, RRI senior scientist and Canada's leading professor of nutrition and brain health, Daphna Rabinovitch and Joanna Gryfe. The book contains a wealth of practical information, as well as 100 brain-healthy recipes, including contributions from Mark McEwan, Michael Smith and other Canadian celebrity chefs.
