1 Rotman Research Institute 25 Years of Impact | 7/15/2014 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The aim of the present academic research analysis is to highlight the RRI's core assets and strengths that have impacted the cognitive neuroscience field, society and the economy. The findings are summarized as follows: The RRI's scientific production is growing every year. The RRI has accumulated a total of 1,454 articles in the Scopus database and since 2007 has been publishing over 100 articles every year reaching the highest number of 185 articles published in 2013. It is interesting to note that while the scientific production is growing, the number of scientists has not experienced similar growth and has remained around at 33 scientists over the past five years. In addition, the number of external grants (federal, provincial, industry, and associations) obtained by the RRI has also been growing alongside their scientific output indicating how committed the RRI is to delivering results to its stakeholders. The RRI's research work is impacting both, the knowledge and innovation sides of the neuroscience field. On the innovative side the RRI's scientific work has been cited by around 100 patents to date. On the knowledge side, 78% of the RRI's scientific production is published in the most influential journals. For example most of RRI publications are in Neuroimage, J Neurosci and J Cognitive Neurosci, ranked in the top 40 journals for Neuroscience around the world. Moreover, the RRI's research is getting cited 82% above the world average. Lastly, 50% of the RRI's research is published in collaboration with foreign institutions, which demonstrates the efficiency and effectiveness of the RRI is in attracting and partnering with other international research centers. The RRI fulfills its role as an educator of the neuroscientists of the future. Over the past 25 years the RRI has trained around 171 postdoctoral trainees and at least 136 have already completed their training. The RRI has enrolled around 129 Masters and PhD students and at least 84 of these graduates have already completed their degrees. The RRI has been sharing its research findings with the general public. The RRI's research has been featured in major Canadian newspapers and magazines. For example, The Globe and Mail has published 102 research stories, Toronto Star 100 stories, The National Post 46 stories and the Canadian Jewish News 41 stories. The media attention received may have played a role in motivating people to support the RRI's research by signing up as research participants as well as contributing through donations. The RRI has proven to be a highly attractive enterprise. The RRI has impacted the Ontario economy by creating 505 jobs over the past 25 years including part-time, full time and contract positions. The RRI is also an enterprise that contributes to the Ontario job market by employing and training highly qualified personnel (HQP). However, the analysis of the skills that RRI's employees develop was not performed in the present report.
