Annual Education Report 2014-2015 June 2015 Page 18 of 30 Baycrest Centre for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long Term Care Funded until March 2016, the Ontario Centres for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care are mandated to enhance the quality of seniors' care through education, research, innovation, evidence-based service delivery and design, and knowledge transfer. As one of three long-term care homes awarded a Centre by the Government of Ontario, the Baycrest Centre for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care develops and evaluates the use of educational innovations to enhance interprofessional geriatric competencies in the current and future long-term care home workforce. Staffed by a manager, interprofessional educators and an administrative/research assistant, the Baycrest Centre for Learning, Research and Innovation is housed within the Centre for Education and Knowledge Exchange in Aging at Baycrest. Key programs include: • Team Essentials: Leading Practices for Long-Term Care: Proactive, reflective and collaborative teams are essential to enhancing care quality and safety in long-term care. Based in leading practices, evidence and standards, Team Essentials offers innovative educational solutions to priority practice issues. Experiential, team-based learning and interprofessional competencies are integrated to foster discovery, critical thinking, communication and solution-focused team responses. Team Essentials (formerly, Geriatric Training Program) entails five 1-day modules for: i) Preventing Acute Deterioration; ii) Responding to Acute Emergencies; iii) Coordinating Care for Responsive Behaviours; iv) Engaging Families in Care; and, v) Enhancing Collaboration and Shared Values. Each module draws on a selection of innovative, experiential learning methods such as: simulation, standardized patients, gamification, active learning, clicker technology, interprofessional education, applied drama and mindfulness techniques. This past year, over 680 staff from 13 long-term care homes and 245 students from 7 schools participated in Team Essentials. • Inter-provider Learning Units: Located on the 3rd and 7th floors of Baycrest's Apotex Centre – Jewish Home for the Aged, the Inter-provider Learning Units offer hands-on learning experiences for students. The space includes simulation and observation rooms, as well as a smart classroom. Working alongside interprofessional educators, learners take part in small-group, clinical and simulated learning opportunities. In 2014-15, the inter-provider learning units provided clinical placements for 16 personal support worker students from George Brown College. • Summer Internships: The goal of the internships is to foster Ontario's future clinician leaders in gerontology. Undergraduate students from a variety of health professions have opportunities to gain knowledge and experience through small group and arts- based learning, resident interactions, clinical rounding and job shadowing focused on aging, clinical issues and best practice guidelines, program evaluation, and interprofessional competencies. In 2014, another 10 students took part, representing a variety of disciplines including: nutrition, kinesiology, social work, pre-med, nursing, psychology, therapeutic recreation, and pharmacy. • Mentorships: The purpose is to offer a mentorship program for health professionals, preferably with advanced training, who may be contemplating career changes and may find a teaching home environment attractive. The goal of the mentorship program is to provide mentees the opportunity to reflect on and seek guidance about their career development in geriatrics and long-term care. This year, a mentorship was awarded to Ms. Fiona Yam, a kinesiology graduate pursuing a career as a gerontological physiotherapist. Ms. Yam shadowed physiotherapists in the Apotex and brought back findings from a 1-day restorative care conference.
