Straight talk W elcome to BrainMatters magazine. In this edition, we are pleased to bring you timely information on healthy living and ways to optimize your cognitive well-being. Baycrest scientists have been studying memory and cognitive function for more than 25 years. Our clinicians and caregivers watch as evidence mounts showing social interactions and the arts can be key contributors in recovery and mood. At the same time, Baycrest is investigating a wide variety of therapies to help our brains function their best. All our research on brain health is leading directly to advancements in the care we deliver and the programs we offer to our community. It also provides more information to caregivers on how best to mitigate the impact of Alzheimer's and related dementias on their loved ones. For example, exercise and socializing can help, but what kind and how much? Can watching a movie with loved ones impact brain health in a positive way? And what happens to us when we make the dietary choice to eat for brain health? We look at these questions in this issue. The answers are important, because every brain is different and "brain healthy" lifestyle choices impact anyone at any age. In our cover story, we invite you to meet Sarah Rafferty, actress and Global Ambassador for The Brain Project, the summer's successful, citywide charitable art installation that raised awareness and funds for Baycrest. Rafferty, a principal cast member of the acclaimed legal drama "Suits," – which films in Toronto – describes what drives her to help us fight Alzheimer's and other dementias. Elsewhere in the magazine, we serve up tips on cold weather fitness preparation and the benefits of volunteering on brain health. Please consider playing a role in supporting our mission to improve brain health for people at every age.
