27 Rotman Research Institute Annual Report 2015 - 2016 FUTURE DIRECTIONS Predicting the future in science and innovation is tricky. By its very nature, science can suddenly reveal principles that were previously unimaginable and change the direction for an entire field. It's difficult to know where you're going sometimes until you are there. Once you do reach that critical juncture, it's more important to e nsure that research findings have the quickes t, broadest, and most effective impact possible. This statement reflects what I believe the future holds for the Rotman Research Institute (RRI) and Baycrest. In the mid 1900's, Bell Labs set up a structure where by ideas written on a chalkboard could be i nstantly translated. This type of environment led to several Nobel prizes and the development and application of some of the most progressive innovations in information technology of the century. At Baycrest's RRI, we have the same potential for making a d ifferen ce in brain health and aging. Over 25 years ago, Baycrest had the foresight to embed research within its walls to make sure that exciting discoveries in human neuroscience would happen here first – the discoveries came and will continue to do so. Our future will bring a focus on fostering collaborations among our scientists and clinicians to push basic science discoveries into practice. It is equally important that we establish a seamless interaction among scientists, clinicians , and educators to b uild a new framework for research and innovation in brain health and aging. We will harness this opportunity th rough collaborations among our greatest minds in research, care , and education to provide the best solutions to keep your brain healthy for as long as possible. If brain health declines during aging, our team will seek solutions to help diagnose the problem earlier and introduce optimal treatment and therapies to maint ain the highest quality of life. This is a future I am confident we can reach. Anthony Randal (Randy) McIntosh, PhD Director, Rotman Research Institute Vice - President, Research
