Rotman Research Institute Annual Report 2015 - 2016
Priority #1 – Advance the field of cognitive ne uroscience through theory - driven research
• Generate new knowledge about the interactive contributions of the brain, body, and
environment to healthy brain aging
• Maintain and leverage world - class technological, informatics, and computational
infrastructure
• E xploit the power of population - level studies to further understand the determinants of
brain health
ROTMAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE STRATEGIC PRIORITIES
(2013 - 2018)
In 2013, the RRI released its five - year RRI Stra tegic Plan (2013 - 2018) , a plan grounded in our
historic focus on cognitive neuroscience, and the belief that a basic understanding of brain
functions – like memory and attention – will help us devise new ways to recognize and treat brain
disease and disord ers.
Crafted by RRI scientists – leaders in the field of cognitive neuroscience – the research directions
articulated in the strategic plan emphasize our unique capacity and capabilities. The plan
addresses three main challenges:
1. To define the key elemen ts that predict cognitive health as we age, focusing on the brain
and our environment
2. To increase engagement of our clinical partners in defining the critical path for
translational research in order to provide direct health benefits from our research
3. To establish new mechanisms to share our knowledge and dynamic innovations, thereby
strengthening RRI's position as a global leader in brain health research
As part of the strategic plan, the RRI has focused on three main priorities:
Priority #2 – Translate discoveries into
new prevention and treatment
strategies
• Conduct more research involving
clinical and community partners
• Assess and assist brain function
in real - world settings
• Increase capacity for knowledge
translation
Priority #3 – Increase capacity to
transfer knowledge
• Attract trainees of exceptional
calibre to Baycrest
• Provide world - class research
training
• Disseminate our expertise
