Annual Education Report 2015-2016 Page 20 of 31 Inter-provider Learning Units: Located on the 3rd and 7th floors of Baycrest's Apotex Centre – Jewish Home for the Aged, the Inter-provider Learning Units offer hands-on learning experiences for students. The space includes simulation and observation rooms, as well as a smart classroom. Working alongside interprofessional educators, learners take part in small-group, clinical and simulated learning opportunities. In 2015-16, the inter-provider learning units provided clinical placements for 32 personal support worker students from George Brown College as well as clinical observerships and time with residents for 10 summer interns. Summer Internships: The goal of the internships is to foster Ontario's future clinician leaders in gerontology. Undergraduate students from a variety of health professions have opportunities to gain knowledge and experience through small group and arts-based learning, resident interactions, clinical rounding and job shadowing focused on aging, clinical issues and best practice guidelines, program evaluation, and interprofessional competencies. In 2015, another 10 students took part, representing a variety of disciplines including: nutrition, kinesiology, gerontology, medicine, nursing, speech language pathology and pharmacy. The internship was gamified and a Web Survey of Internship Alumni 2012-2014 was also conducted to retroactively evaluate the internship program. With guidance and facilitated discussion from an arts-based learning specialist and program leaders from the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Reel Comfort program, interns were engaged in a documentary-making project designed to help them understand and interpret issues from multiple perspectives, to promote deep and extended thought, and to explore personal views on aging - critical aspects of effective clinical practice. The goal of this virtual mentorship program is to provide mentees the opportunity to reflect on and seek guidance about their career development in geriatrics and long-term care. This year's mentees included: Gajan Sivakumaran, a pre-med student with strong interest in geriatrics, education and simulation as well as Shannon Coffey who is pursuing a career in occupational therapy with a background in gerontology. Educational Research and Innovation: This year saw the design, development, beta-testing and evaluation of a serious, game-based eLearning App to improve early detection of acute deterioration in the frail elderly by nurses and personal support workers. App development was supported through a SIM-one/IDEAS/CPSI Simulation for Safety & Quality Improvement grant and a generous donation through the Baycrest Foundation. The SOS Gaming App integrates a proven game mechanic that reinforces learning of pre-existing educational content via interactive task challenges. Through this
