Baycrest - End of Life Volunteer Manual 56 SELF CARE WHAT IS STRESS? Stress is the body's way of responding to demands. When people feel stressed by something, their bodies react by releasing chemicals into the blood. These chemicals give people more energy and strength, which can be a good thing if the stress is caused by physical danger. But stress can be a bad thing when it is in response to an emotional situation or if the stress goes on for too long. Stress can affect both body and mind. People under large amounts of stress can become tired, sick and unable to concentrate or think clearly. People often experience stress when they find themselves in situations where they have little control. The signs of stress include: • Muscle tension • Pounding heart • Sweating • Dry mouth • Increased breathing rate • Butterflies in the stomach • Cold hands and feet • The urge to go to the bathroom If stress goes on for too long or becomes chronic, people may experience the following symptoms: • Fatigue • Apathy or depression • Being overly emotional • Loss of enjoyment and spontaneity • Excessive worrying, nervousness and anxiety • Loss of sex drive • Irritability or impatience
