BE AWARE OF ANY POSSIBLE HARM IN:
• Sharing personal information about a personal experience with
death and dying
• Accepting an invitation from a patient/family to a family
activity/party
• Providing clothes, toys or meals to a patient/family
When in doubt, check the policies or ask the volunteer coordinator

RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS OF THE
VOLUNTEER
Volunteers are not paid staff. They are giving Baycrest the gift of
their time and skills. Volunteers have the right to refuse assignments
and should not feel guilty if, for some reason, they are not
comfortable with an assignment.
To fulfill their roles, volunteers are expected to:
• Commit enough time
• Be dependable and flexible
• Work as part of a team
• Complete all required training and demonstrate they have
achieved the desired competencies
• Be open to supervision and feedback
• Adhere to Baycrest's policies (e.g. confidentiality)
PRIVACY AND CONFIDENTIALITY
When communicating with the person, family members and other
care providers, you will learn very personal information. As a
volunteer, you have a responsibility to respect the person's and
family's privacy and protect their confidentiality. You must not
disclose what you have learned to anyone other than other members
of the team. This rule applies to everyone on the team, and is key to
creating an atmosphere of trust.
