Working together with other family
members on the process can lessen
the load. "When helping a loved
one declutter, take your time. Avoid
conflict, passing judgment or being
pushy. Something that looks like
junk to you may hold meaning to
your relative. A supportive tone is
generally more encouraging and
productive."
Sorting through our clutter to
determine what to keep and what to discard is tough
enough, but it can be a far greater challenge to
relinquish our belongings.
"It can make it emotionally easier to let go of things by
giving to those in need," says Rittenberg. "Donate items
to a favourite charity or present them as gifts to family
members. The spirit of giving is a great way to refocus
emotions and breathe new life into old belongings."
Spring cleaning and decluttering can be a tough job but
it can also be liberating. Focus on the positive outcomes.
It can be about making more space for what truly
matters. Much like springtime, it can be about hope and
new beginnings.
