Straight talk W elcome to the Spring 2017 BrainMatters magazine. In this edition we are pleased to bring you exciting and practical information on healthy living and ways to optimize your cognitive well-being at any stage of life. At Baycrest, our scientists are helping lead the way in the study of memory and cognitive function. We are continuing to discover how everyday lifestyle modifications and interactions with others can contribute to better brain health. As always, our research on brain health is leading directly to advancements in the care we deliver and the programs we offer to our community. Baycrest also provides information to caregivers on how best to mitigate the impact of Alzheimer's and related dementias on their loved ones. Every brain is different and "brain healthy" lifestyle choices impact anyone at any age; which is why BrainMatters' mission to deliver the latest stories about research and care practices for cognitive well-being and healthy living is so important – because you could find it makes a difference in your life or the life of someone you love. In our cover story, we invite you to meet Zane Caplansky, Toronto restaurateur, media personality and one of the city's deli mavens. He takes time out from serving up famous smoked meat sandwiches to participate in the Baycrest 2046 Challenge, aging 30 years in a specially designed suit to see what it's like to live as an older adult. You'll read about how the experience changed him for the better. Also in this issue, we give you some tips on the healing power of music, show you why yoga knows no age limit and how physically decluttering your home can also help clear your mind. Please consider playing a role in supporting our mission to improve brain health for people at every age. Call our Donations Office at 416-785-2875 or visit baycrest.org/brainmatters/give.
