Straight talk W elcome to the latest edition of BrainMatters magazine, bringing you timely information on healthy living, ways to optimize your cognitive well-being and how to "add life to years." Baycrest Health Sciences will soon reach a major milestone - our 100th anniversary. In 2018 we will celebrate a century of excellence in care, education, research and innovation in the field of brain health and aging. We will honour the founders and visionaries who saw a need in the older adult community and did everything in their power to fill it. For 100 years, Baycrest has benefited from the unwavering support of our community. From generous donors and dedicated volunteers to passionate staff and residents, we know we can always count on the backing of our great community to help us continue to provide excellence in care to all those who need it. Which is why, in this edition of BrainMatters, just before our celebrations officially begin next year, we are proudly paying it forward by sharing important stories about how to be difference-makers in society and lead "brain healthy" lives. In our cover story, we invite you to meet John Mann, lead singer of Canadian folk-rock band Spirit of the West who is courageously battling early onset Alzheimer's. Mann's story of bravery and hope reminds us why being a leading resource of information for caregivers is a major part of Baycrest's mission to help humanity fight Alzheimer's and other dementias. Throughout the magazine, we serve up tips on brain-healthy cooking for the holidays, the impact of environmental design on long-term care and how to spot issues with your memory. Our scientists keep investigating therapies and lifestyle choices that will help our brains function their best. Ongoing research is leading directly to innovations in caregiving and the programs we offer here in Toronto and worldwide. Please play a role in supporting our mission to improve brain health for people at every age.
