CLINICAL SERVICES SUPPORT KL-CARE Annual Report 2016-2017 Page 16 CAREGIVER SUPPORT An evaluation of a support program for caregivers of persons with dementia Social engagement is emerging as a significant factor that can improve the quality of life of individuals with dementia and their caregivers. Caregivers of individuals with dementia find they share similar concerns and experiences while they care for their loved ones; thus, they may benefit from participating in caregiver support groups. In response to this need, Baycrest offers specialized programs that provide emotional and informational support. This project evaluated five different caregiver support programs that included two existing groups (The Changing Relationship and Caring for Your Loved One), and three new, innovative groups (an online group; a creative writing group; and a group that incorporates arts activities for individuals with dementia, which is held while caregivers attend a psychotherapeutic group intervention). KL-CARE reviewed specific outcome measures for caregivers, such as mood, knowledge, relationship building, and self-efficacy, and mapped these program goals to the appropriate assessment tools. KL-CARE supported social workers in developing a caregiver assessment toolkit to provide a standardized approach to evaluate program efficacy. Through KL-CARE's leadership and support on data collection, evaluation, and tool design, the team was able to determine that by attending these programs, caregivers received greater access to care. Further, these individuals emphasized the importance of being able to talk about their feelings with others and they appreciated the "safe and comfortable environment" that was provided. Caregivers in all of the support groups reported high levels of satisfaction with the programs. Through increased knowledge, uptake of coping strategies, and improvement in mood and quality of life, this evaluation demonstrated the impact of this program on caregiver well-being.
