20 1 6 -20 1 7 AN N UAL R EP O RT R E SE AR CH TR AI N I N G CENTR E 02 Greetings from the Rotman Research Institute (RRI) Research Training Centre (RTC) at Baycrest! The 2016-2017 academic year has been yet another growth year for the RTC, as we have made significant progress on achieving our vision of providing world-class knowledge and training grounded in basic research and preparing trainees to excel in their chosen careers across diverse sectors, such as in academia, industry, not-for-profit, healthcare, and government. As we celebrate the achievements and milestones of our RRI trainees, we also pause to reflect on where we have been this past year and where we are still striving to go. This past year saw the delivery of another 25 workshops, 26 academic rounds lectures, and our Innovative Perspectives in Neuroscience (IPN) conference. With a total workshop audience of over 400 attendees from over 18 organizations, the RTC continues to serve the educational needs of research trainees across Ontario and into Quebec. This past year, the RTC also launched two new and exciting initiatives. RRI trainees offered an 8-week continuing education lecture series to older adults living in the community in partnership with Ryerson University's Programs for 50+ and the LIFE Institute. The RTC also partnered with the University Health Network, the Hospital for Sick Children, Mount Sinai Hospital, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, and St. Michael's Hospital RTCs to develop inter-organiza- tional educational offerings. In the coming year, the RTC again hopes to expand its offerings, reach, audience, and influence. We hope to serve as a strong advocate within and outside of Baycrest for basic research, communicating its vital importance to the research enterprise and reinforcing the need for enhanced federal and provincial funding. We will continue our focus on professional and career development in order to better prepare trainees for employment. We will strengthen our partnerships with industry and community organizations to foster internship, sponsorship, fundraising, and knowledge translation opportunities for our RRI trainees. We are also excited to welcome Dr. Asaf Gilboa to the RTC as our new Faculty Lead. Dr. Gilboa will be replacing Dr. Ryan, who is stepping down following 8 years of service on the RTC steering committee. Dr. Gilboa's stellar record of research and mentorship will bring a fresh perspective to the RTC leadership, and we look forward to working with him. We are eager to see what the new academic year brings and we hope that you will join us on this ongoing adventure.
