Building on our inaugural success last
year, the RTC hosted our 2nd Innovative
Perspectives in Neuroscience (IPN)
conference where this year's theme was
Data Analytics.
This conference offered trainees
different opportunities to connect with
industry and not-for-profit leaders
about alternative career and research
opportunities in neuroscience and
brain health via presentations and a
networking lunch. There were guest
speakers from Cancer Care Ontario, the
Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences,
and IBM Canada. There was also a special
guest appearance from Nao, IBM's
Watson-powered robot!
The conference took an experiential
approach by hosting a case competition.
Competitors (trainees and research staff)
applied their skills to analyze a dataset
from the Canadian Study of Health and
Aging to identify a real-world challenge in
aging and brain health and make
recommendations based upon their
findings. Congratulations to the case
competition winners, Dr. Derek Beaton,
Hans Melo, and Dr. Jenny Rieck who won
a grand prize of $1,000.
"It was nice hearing from
people who had academic
backgrounds from industry and
how they transitioned to roles
that bridged the gap between
industry and what I saw as
academic."
