T H E B R A I N P R O J E C T 2 0 1 7 64 Enlivened by his interest in spacial structures and inter- connectivity, Andre Kan's paintings serve as excitable blueprints for a possible reality. Each work depicts the artist's signature imaginative building blocks that converge and begin to build upon each other and strengthen each other in an ever transforming space. Kan's structures are substantial and complex but not anchored—they float suspended in his psychological space. In this way, his buildings remain a playful proposition for the viewer not yet tied to a specific place or function. He propels us towards an optimistic future where new connections and constructions have yet to materialize. Luminate acts as a signifier that reminds us all of the psychological and physical importance of "lighting up" our environment and creating a positive aura despite the hardships that shadow us with fear. Through its movement, energy and mark- ings, the brain sculpture Luminate suggests that even the smallest mark can make a world of a difference in our interconnected experience.
