Ben Sellick is a multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto.
His recent works are assemblages of thousands of tiny
pieces of paper.
Sellick cuts and produces the pieces with a three-hole-
punch and desktop spiral binding machine. Using an
X-Acto blade, tweezers and glue, he meticulously and
methodically arranges each individual piece, one at
a time, into various shapes, patterns and forms. The
process is a highly repetitive performative act which demands concentration,
commitment and dedication.
Sellick's concept is based on tree rings, which are natural records of growth
and change over time. The rings are visual reminders of times passed. No set of
tree rings is the same as another, just as no people or sets of memories are the
same. We can be similar and have shared experiences, but we are all unique unto
ourselves. We all have our own individual stories. Memories are our sacred portals
to our own personal histories.
